Project Overview

The Nakhodka Methanol Plant project is a major energy and chemical engineering project in Russia’s Far East. The project was constructed by China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd. as the EPC contractor and operated by Nakhodka Mineral Fertilizer Plant.

The plant includes multiple functional buildings with diversified HVAC requirements. The air conditioning systems needed to meet strict requirements, including:

  • ► 1. Corrosion resistance in chemical industrial environments;
  • ► 2. Reliable operation under extremely cold climate conditions;
  • ► 3. Precise temperature and humidity control for different functional areas;
  • ► 4. Compliance with Russian engineering standards and project specifications.

To address these complex operating conditions, Holtop supplied more than 600 sets of HVAC equipment, including:

  • ► 1. Constant temperature and humidity air conditioning units;
  • ► 2. Combined air handling units (AHUs);
  • ► 3. Direct expansion (DX) air conditioning units;
  • ► 4. Intelligent control systems.

The equipment covers various areas throughout the plant, including process workshops, laboratories, warehouses, GIS substations, security buildings, and other supporting facilities.

Key HVAC Challenges

01. Different Engineering Standards

Russian HVAC standards differ significantly from conventional domestic project requirements, creating additional challenges for overseas engineering and delivery.

Holtop customized equipment design and technical documentation according to Russian project requirements to ensure smooth installation, commissioning, and operation.

02. High-Temperature Heat Source Requirements

The primary heating source of the project uses 95/70°C high-temperature hot water, which is different from the commonly used 60/50°C supply and return water system in many domestic applications.

To ensure safe and efficient heat exchange, Holtop developed a dedicated hot water control system with mixing regulation technology.

The system stabilizes the water temperature entering the air handling units at 80/70°C, effectively avoiding problems such as reduced heat exchange efficiency and equipment protection activation caused by direct connection to high-temperature water sources.

This solution improves both system reliability and terminal heating performance.

03. Diverse Application Requirements

The plant contains multiple functional zones, and each area has different requirements for temperature and humidity control.

Holtop developed a distributed environmental control solution to achieve precise regulation for different spaces.

Customized Solutions for Complex Industrial Environments

01. Distributed Temperature and Humidity Control

Unlike traditional systems where one air conditioning unit serves only one area, Holtop’s solution enables one constant temperature and humidity unit to serve multiple independent zones.

For areas with different temperature and humidity requirements, independent heating and humidification sections are installed at the terminal side, allowing targeted adjustment for each zone.

This design avoids inaccurate control caused by uniform air supply and improves overall environmental stability.

02. Enhanced Safety Protection for Hazardous Areas

Methanol production areas are classified as hazardous environments where combustible gases may exist, requiring strict safety standards for electrical components.

Holtop constant temperature and humidity units adopt explosion-proof designs for key components, including:

  • • 1. Motors;
  • • 2. Heaters;
  • • 3. Controllers;
  • • 4. Sensors.

The units also feature corrosion-resistant and highly sealed cabinet structures.

These designs provide safe and stable air conditioning performance for critical areas such as:

  • • 1. Methanol storage areas;
  • • 2. Pump rooms;
  • • 3. Loading stations;
  • • 4. Control rooms.

03. Durable Cabinet Structure for Chemical Environments

The cabinet performance of Holtop air conditioning units meets European standards.

The units feature:

  • • 1. Strong structural frames;
  • • 2. High airtightness;
  • • 3. Corrosion-resistant materials for key components.

These designs help protect equipment against long-term exposure to corrosive gases, extend service life, and reduce maintenance costs.

For chemical industrial environments, reliability and durability are essential factors for reducing lifecycle operating costs.

04. Intelligent Centralized Control System

The project adopts a domestic PLC control system integrated with a DCS-based electrical architecture.

The complete control system includes:

  • • 1. Up to 20 expansion modules;
  • • 2. More than 500 digital and analog control points.

The system upgrades operation from independent equipment control to centralized building-level management.

The local HMI system supports Chinese, English, and Russian languages, enabling both Chinese and Russian technical teams to monitor equipment operation through their native languages.

This significantly improves overseas operation efficiency and reduces communication barriers during maintenance.

Full-Cycle Project Support

Holtop provided comprehensive support throughout the entire project lifecycle.

During the pre-sales stage, Holtop closely coordinated with the project team to address overseas standards and provided complete technical documents in Chinese, English, and Russian.

During commissioning, Holtop dispatched professional engineers to Russia to complete equipment commissioning and technical support.

The HVAC systems successfully passed joint acceptance by the EPC contractor and Russian project owner and entered stable operation.

Through strict quality control and professional project management, Holtop provided reliable support for the successful delivery of this international industrial project.

Conclusion

The successful implementation of the Nakhodka NFP Methanol Plant project represents Holtop’s capability in delivering HVAC solutions for complex overseas industrial environments.

By combining customized engineering design, reliable equipment performance, intelligent control systems, and professional lifecycle services, Holtop continues to support global industrial projects with efficient and stable environmental control solutions.
